Moving to Europe: Wrapping Up Our Lives & Planning for the Future

This may come as a surprise to some, and less so to others… but we are moving to Amsterdam. This isn’t something new we’re springing onto our friends and family. We were supposed to move last Spring but life has its way of throwing curve balls at the most unexpected times.

After months of planning and selling off nearly everything we own for the move, someone very close to us in the family was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. It’s somewhat of a new cancer so we had no idea how the treatment process was going to go. We just knew we had to fight this together as a team.

Preparation

It hasn’t been easy and the fight is far from over, but we finally feel the time is right to make our move. As of today, we’re giving ourselves a month to prepare for the move again. Its a scary situation. That goes without saying right? The first time we had a few months to study Dutch, get all the documents ready, get Iggy’s paperwork in order, and pretty much everything else. This time, we have one month. Some of those things are still taken care of from last time, but Iggy’s process has to start all over and we still have more possessions to sell.

It’s also going to be cold when we get there. Real cold. That means bulkier clothing and a bleaker outcome if things don’t go as planned. Which means we have to work that much more diligently to get our ducks in a row. Cross our “t”s and dot our “i”s. That whole spiel.

We’d like to take you along our journey as we spend nearly every day of this month preparing. Today, we worked in my mother’s shed for most of the day deciding what we can part with or put in storage. The plan is to prioritize our belongings that aren’t immediate needed and pack them to put in storage. When friends or family come to visit, they can grab a piece of luggage for us to fill out our home overseas. Going from home-ownership to the unknown is no joke. We had a three bedroom townhouse worth of stuff that’s hard to let go. Knickknacks from our five beautiful years together. You get the point.. today hasn’t been easy.

The good part is that we got a lot done today; more than we thought possible. It was nice to at least get an eye on nearly everything we own. The job should be done by Wednesday I’d say. Tomorrow, we call Iggy’s vet and make sure he can get his USDA approved shots. Those are necessary for him to travel overseas. We’ll keep and eye on flights throughout the week and likely book by this weekend.

I plan to blog every week this month, save for Mondays. Speaking of Mondays, we have to wrap up our D&D campaign that could easily go for another 6-8 months. That’s a major bummer. We have a great group of people we’ve found to play our favorite game. They’ll be missed dearly. Tomb of Annihilation is serious stuff. My character died last week. I’ve never lost a character before. The whole table was bummed but it made for a great story. That’s all you could ask for.

Anyway.. you’ll hear from us often this month. We’d love to hear feedback from our readers and answer any and all questions that may come our way. We look forward to what may come and you should too!
